La gente, el grupo, la familia: plural or singular?

Collective nouns like la gente (the people), el grupo (the group), la familia (the family), el equipo (the team), etc. are singular and take singular pronouns, adjectives and verbs.

La gente es alegre.

People are happy (literally “The people is happy”).

Un grupo está comiendo.

A group is eating.

Note: you may occasionally come across the plural las gentes ("the peoples", as in ethnic groups) in Spanish literary texts.

«Soy como las gentes que a mi tierra vinieron» (Manuel Machado).

"I'm like the peoples who came to my land" (Manuel Machado).
